THE GLOBALIZATION OF SURF CULTURE AND ITS IMPACT IN DESTINATION MANAGEMENT

Surfing is more than sport. It has its spiritual side like kung fu, its own culture like any other art movement; it is a way of living and often a synonym of fashion and lifestyle perceived by the society worldwide.
The shaping of the surfing culture started decades ago and today is lived not only by surfers, but also by larger groups who identify themselves with surfing sport culture without ever standing on a board but you can actually find in every corner of the earth branded surf clothing even if the closest surf spots are thousands of miles away.
We may exaggerate and call it the “globalization of surf culture” which made surfing more popular and a very profitable business. Actually, one of the ways to continue protecting our waves is to make them profitable, and Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, is an example of how surfing came above other economical interests. Supertubos is now one of the greatest surf breaks in Europe and a World Tour Event bringing thousands of people to this small fishing village which is now in the map of surfing like never before. Only with its first event, Peniche was mentioned more times in the press than in the past 50 years together.
The visibility of surfing made also possible organizations like Surf Riders Foundation, Save the Waves Coalition, Surfers against Sewage and World Surfing Reserves just to name a few, along with many anonym individuals to shout out loud to the world environmental atrocities from happening.

The surf culture cool, positive, sustainable and dynamic attitude is now used for marketing purposes by many other businesses, like car and insurance adverts, or even bank loan campaigns and the use of broadband in mobile phones. Actually, these businesses are some of the major sponsors of today’ surfing.
Many coastal destinations are also managing their brand in association to surfing not only because of the surf tourism, which in many fishing villages happen to be not a niche but one of its main tourism markets. Modern coastal resorts often use surf as way of promoting a fashionable, dynamic and cool image and consequently sponsorship of surfing events became an important item of public and private sector’s marketing budgets. Surfing events have now many forms from purely surfing competition events to surf music festivals, photo exhibitions and film festivals where surf is the main theme.
This transformation of surfing was possible due to the increasing number of surfers in the planet that get together also with non surfers to celebrate surfing as a cultural phenomenon, where cool music, art and surfing express sessions are taken.

KITE & SURF - THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

The way you do it may differ from the traditional surf, to windsurf, kite, bodyboard, bodysurf, kneeboard, paddle surf, and all of these are constantly developing new surfing techniques. In fact, experienced surfers can improve their skills by combining other sports. Learning a similar surf sport can be a way of “getting out of the box” and trying new things on top of a board. For example you can upgrade your surf skills by learning how to do kite, and the other way around, as kite surfers can always learn how to surf and increase their kite skills”, says Joao from Surf’inn Surfcamps.
We at Surf’inn, are driving this trend offering packages to both experienced and beginners that combine accommodation with kite & surf lessons”.
Joao also says that the combination of both surf and kitesurf is also a way to maximize the time spent on surfing holidays. “We always expect weather conditions to be perfect for surf or kite, but these are always changing, being impossible to predict what the weather will be like. So, if you are adaptable you can always take advantage of what the weather will be”.
Surf’inn Lagos has been offering these packs since 2003 for all those who wish to have a diversified watersport experience.  These water sports need different natural conditions but Lagos has unique geographic conditions to combine surf, kite, windsurf and wakeboard just a few minutes away from each other! From perfect waves to consistent thermal winds and flat water, Lagos is indeed a blessed place.

The new surf travel trend: The power of branded surf camps

Interview from Surfers Village magazine to Surf'inn

The new surf travel trend: The power of branded surf camps

In the past few decades surfers have been exploring the world in search of new and different waves, leaving prints in almost every country and surf spot. Not long ago surf holidays were confined to a small and restricted number of surfers and to some more popular surfing destinations. More recently, the Internet and low cost flights made surf holidays abroad more democratic and accessible to everyone.

Surf travel was definitely powered by the Internet and access to information. Who would imagine in the sixties we would have today webcams all over the place to check out the best surf spots? Of course the pleasure for never ending and no-aim surf-trips still drives many surf travelers nowadays, but most of them will “Google it” first.

Along with the democratization of surf tourism, surf magazines, brands and movies, made surf more than a sport. Surf is a lifestyle, and it can be the main motivation for travelling overseas and discovering new cultures.

But what about now?

We have more information than ever, hundreds of destinations available, waves and breaks, surf camps and schools, packages and Surfaris, surf-trips, and thousands of other options to choose from.

Yes it’s cheaper and easier but that does not mean simpler choices. Surf travelers want to choose the right combination of waves, but also services like accommodation, flights, classes, boats etc, turning the next surf vacations into a more conscious decision. From blogs to forums, social networks help surfers to firstly collect hundreds of opinions about previous experiences.
In the past few years companies like Surf’inn Surf camps – a branded surf camp chain – envisaged a branded surf camp chain based on specific criteria and coherent values.

Pedro,  the company manager says: "It's important to give our clients the same quality standards on each surf camp, so that people bind Surf'inn with great surf experiences and want to return next year!" ... “our clients are very selective and have high expectations, so we have to work harder and harder to overcome those expectations. It's our goal to promote only the best surf camps on each destination. All Surf’inn Surf camps cater the best facilities and instructors and guides in the area. Location, surf equipment, accommodation, insurance, and environment policies are some of the main criteria that Surf’inn analyses to select surf camps

Surf Travel (interview from Surfers Village to surf'inn in 2010)

Surf camps network expands in Portugal

A new company of surf camps was born in Portugal. Surfinn.travel began operating in 2009 devoted to offer a better accommodation experience to all surfers.
Surf'inn offers several surf camps in Portugal along the coast selected and close to the best surf spots in the country. The company gathered a large team of professionals with extensive field experience and local knowledge, with the aim of becoming the most comprehensive branded expanding network of surf camps, offering various packages from Surf Trips, Surfaris, Surf camps, mobile Surf school.

Pedro Quirino, Surf'inn's sales manager stated that: "Surf'inn offers customers the best possible surfing experience, tailored to each level of surfing, its travel requests and to their preferences ... all trips are unique, according to the travel companion, time of year, expectations, etc. It is important a good recommendation and support to result in the perfect trip. The fact that we have several surf camps scattered around the coast, allows us to be impartial when proposing a destination to our customers."

Another reason that led to the emergence of Surf'inn was that “We were faced with the discontent of some people who came to Portugal and felt disappointed because they have chosen very economic packages and consequently have been housed elsewhere on "self -called" Surf camps without the most basic accommodation. T
his situation is not conducive to surfing tourism to Portugal. We want to fight this situation and be recognized by having the best quality service at the best market prices. This is our goal!" Until now, because of their tailor made service, managed to attract to their surf camps a more diverse audience of all ages demanding since the first experience with a surfboard to the most radical surfers in search of the best spots in the Surfaris."

After a few sleeping years, Portugal has now entered the right wave in the surf tourism worldwide. Besides the information regarding packages, surf camps, trips and surf schools, the company's website www.surfinn.travel features news, forecasts, and much more unbiased information to help tourists and surfers to choose the best trip according to their needs and experience.
